I love Michaela Coel. If you haven’t seen Chewing Gum on Netflix you are missing out. She is a comedic genius that proved with Black Earth Rising that she can handle drama as well. From a sheltered, churchy girl breaking free from a sheltered upbringing to an attorney unearthing the truth behind a genocide, she’s been covering a lot of heavy material.
I May Destroy You is no exception. I didn’t know what this show was about walking in. The colorfulness of Chewing Gum made me wonder if it was in the same vein, but as the first episode rolled out I realized it was a more serious tone.
Young Millennials Entering Adulthood
Arabella is living the life most elder millennials wish they had walked into around 2008. Her late-night tweets led to a book deal which led to a national bestseller which led to week-long sabbaticals in Italy filled with recreational drugs, drinking, meeting cute boys, and writing at coffee shops.
If the entire show was about this, it would be enough. There is a cast of friends that she shares her flat and life with. I clock them as younger millennials because the angst that older millennials have is not there. They’re clearly in their thirties, but the push to own a home and procreate is completely…
