Nine Percent: The First Season of Hulu’s High Fidelity
I have to admit that I’m not a fan of the original film. John Cusack and a music store is a winning combination, but the execution didn’t land with me. It just seemed like a guy that was lamenting about relationships that seemed doomed before they ever began. What mortal thought they would be able to pull Catherine Zeta-Jones with a cool music collection? It’s been over a decade since I’ve seen it so maybe I’m remembering it wrong.
The television show was added to my queue after I read a fascinating interview with Zoe Kravitz. I’ve seen her in a film here and there, but I knew of her because of her famous parents. I love her for her style, I envy her stature and the ability to pull off amazing outfits. She said in the interview that landing High Fidelity was great because she’d missed out on other opportunities for being “urban”. That was shocking to me. When you’re a descendant of a rock star and grew up in the business, I didn’t know you could still be othered. I get that. There are so many things about me that when meeting someone new and the first thing they zero in on is my heritage, I take a step back. Not that it offends or hurts, it’s just that I’d forgotten until they mentioned it. A moment of, “that’s right I’m other in that sense, I totally forgot for a second.”
